Ewan McNicoll - Second Officer - MV Bute
ABOUT ME I am one of the Navigators onboard MV Bute and I have been appointed here since January 2010.
I am responsible to the Captain for the safe navigation of the vessel, berthing/unberthing of the vessel, the safe loading and stability of the vessel, maintenance of all navigation equipment (compasses, radars, electronic navigation equipment etc), charts and publications and I also help look after the safety systems of the ship such as the liferaft evacuation system, rescue boats and fire fighting equipment.
CAREER After being educated at Grange Academy in Kilmarnock, I started my cadetship at Glasgow College of Nautical Studies in 2003 to gain my certificate of competency as a deck Officer with Northern Marine Management, which is a branch of the Stena group of companies. This was great experience as I was able to serve on different types of vessels around the world.
I was on VLCC's (Very Large Crude Carrier), suezmax tankers (again for crude oil), Ro-Pax ferries, Stena HSS (Highspeed Sea Service) and also two tall ships which were part of the Tall ships Youth Trust (which was abolustely great fun!)
I finished with Northern Marine in 2007 and joined Caledonian MacBrayne that year. First trip in the company was onboard MV Clansman as 3rd mate, sailing to places such as Coll, Tiree, Barra and Uist. After this trip, I was meant to joing MV Isle of Lewis on the Stornonway - Ullapool service, but instead joined MV Caledonian Isles on the Ardrossan brodick service to Arran. I was there for around 18 months when I ended going back to MV Clansman for another year. This was also good experience as MV Clansman also serves as the relief vessel for all other major vessels in the fleet, so I was able to take in the other services and gain experience there. Early 2010 I was appointed to MV Bute and that's where I am at present.
I am curently studying towards my Class II/I Certificate of Competency.
HOBBIES My Hobbies consist of Golf, Flying, Football, Music (playing drums and percussion very VERY loudly!!) and all things electronic!
